Ridicule Sightings - Faith

What is faith? Being a Christian, I know many people who say wholeheartedly they have faith in God. They are convinced that there’re rooms in heaven reserved for them because they have accepted Jesus Christ as their savior. As is written in the book of Roman, “ That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” Many Christians are convinced that they’re guaranteed eternal lives as long as they confess with their mouth that Jesus is their Lord and believe in their heart that God had raised him from the dead. They’re saved all because of Jesus. Jesus had already redeemed them with His blood. How great this faith is!
Some Christians are so faithful as to believe they’ll be saved no matter how they live the rest of their life. Some are so faithful as to say they’ll be forgiven even if they continue to sin. Some are faithful enough to ignore the rest of the bible. Some don’t even read the bible. In fact, these by far are the majority of Christians nowadays. It’s true that Jesus had already paid the price. It’s true that men cannot save themselves by work. However, does faith mean doing nothing to gain something? Faith is such an abstract word these days. Let’s step back and focus on a word that’s a tad less intense, confidence.
Some years ago, I watched a popular TV program, American Idol. I watched not only the singing contests but also interviews of the contestants. Why did they enter the contest? Mostly it was because they were confident in their singing ability. They believed that they could win or become famous. Of course all but one person would eventually win but thousands upon thousands of young people were confident enough to do something about their dreams. Men and women date one another. Why? They must have found interests in each other. Eventually they get married when they’re convinced of their love and are confident that both are committed in the relationship. They’re confident enough to take on the responsibility of caring for another person. When you’re confident that there’ll be rewards, you’d do something about it. You’d put forth your best effort. You don’t just take. You would give. Would it make sense for someone who dreams about becoming a pop star to say this? “Hmm, I’m such a great singer. Let me just sit around watching TV and do nothing about it.”  Would it make sense for a couple to say this? “I’m so confident about our mutual love and commitment. Let’s fool around with someone else.”
If confidence gives you the motivation to work toward your dreams, how much greater the motivation faith will give you? Some successful middle-aged people who have more than enough money to live comfortably the rest of their life would quit their highly paid and stressful job or business in order to serve the society or the church. It takes faith to take that step. They have enough faith that it’s the right thing to do. They have enough faith to give up something for what is right. Some less than well to do middle-aged people also quit their job or business in order to serve the society or the church. It also takes faith to do that. They have enough faith to put what is right to do above their own desires or comfort. Some young people decide to serve the society or the church before they even experience any other options. That takes faith. They have enough faith that this choice they make stands above all else.
Faith is not about empty words from your mouth. When you have faith, it shows. Why did Paul write in the letter to the Roman Christians that they’d certainly be saved as long as they confessed with their mouth and believed in their heart? You ought to consider the lives of Christians in Rome shortly after Jesus was crucified and resurrected. Hundreds of people saw Jesus after he was raised from the dead. Christians were eager to spread the gospel but were constantly persecuted by the Roman government because Christians believed that Jesus was the one and only God, which was in direct conflict with the Roman traditions of many gods. During that time, Christians who confessed with their mouth could be taken to the Coliseum to be devoured by lions. Paul wrote this letter to remind the Roman Christians to be honest with their faith even if it would cost their lives. It wasn’t about empty words at all. Moreover, what does it mean when you call Jesus Lord? You would do what the Lord says. You would not ignore any order or cammand of the Lord. True faith calls for sacrifice. It is not to say that you can ever gain eternal live by work. However, when you have faith, you simply wouldn’t ignore it. You would instead put forth your best effort, energy and resource toward your faith. When you have faith, you don’t just take. You would certainly give. Otherwise, it’s just a lie, not faith at all.
